Pyotr Mikhailovich Boklevsky (1816-1897) is an outstanding illustrator of Russian classical literature of the second half of the 19th century. Considering Gogol the greatest of Russian writers, Boklevsky devoted his whole life to illustrating his works. For 40 years, the artist has created several series of portraits of the characters in Gogol's comedy The Inspector General. The first gallery of types from The Inspector General appeared in 1858. It consisted of 14 lithographs printed in Moscow in Bachmann's lithograph. The stones for printing were prepared by the lithographer V. Pugoshnikov. This series formed the basis of a real deck of playing cards. Modern technological means have made it possible to present monochrome lithographs in color. And again, the unforgettable Gogol's heroes, drawn by Boklevsky, found life as figures of a deck of cards, as if they were created for this from the very beginning.
