Work on sketches for a card deck was started in 1985, while studying at the Palekh Art School. Maps with these plots were conceived even earlier - during the period of service in the army. The well-known Palekh art critic V. T. Kotov (1916-2002) was of great help in working on the sketches. The novice artist brought his drawings to him and received useful advice and comments. So V. T. Kotov drew attention to the need to abandon the caricature incarnation of heroes and work more from nature, because evil spirits should have a real human appearance. Friends, acquaintances and relatives willingly agreed to pose for Alexei for such unusual characters. The finished drawings lay for several years until they were seen by the St. Petersburg collector of playing cards A. S. Perelman (1933-1995), he convinced the artist to continue the work he had begun. In the summer of 1994, all 54 cards of the future deck, made in tempera on primed cardboard, were ready. The first edition of the cards was carried out in 1998, the second, with some corrections, in 2004. Even earlier, in 2003, the artist prepared a detailed description of the characters included in the deck and released a set of postcards of the same name. In 2012, with the support of the Moscow museum and library "Gogol's House", the maps were printed in a reduced version to 36 sheets under the new title "Viy and other lower spirits of East Slavic mythology" ("Inferior spirits of East Slavic mythology"). In 2015, the cards were released in miniature format.
